2008 Harriers Fall Update
With the Fall Series in full gear it is not too soon to
start planning for spring races. The
Houston Harriers will host the Buffalo Wallow 6K Cross Country Championship
Race on Saturday February 2, 2008. This is
the first race of the HARRA Spring Series.
Run the BUFFALO WALLOW 6K in Buffalo
Bayou Park
on Allen Park-way at Montrose. 3 loops of a 2km course between the Wortham
Fountain and Taft Street.
The course is identical to the 2007 Buffalo Wallow 6k course. There will be two races. The men’s race begins at 8:00 a.m. followed
by the women at 9:00 a.m. This is a fun
cross country race. Reminder: HARRA
Fall Series awards are presented at this race.
New to the Houston Harriers is a formal training group under
the direction of Jon Warrren. Jon is a
member of the Houston Harriers and brings years of experience not only as a
runner but as head coach of the Rice Owls track and field. Here is what we can share about Jon’s
experience: While attending Rice University,
he was a member of the Rice cross country and track team, competing at the 1983
NCAA championships in his first season with the Owls. He was also part of the
1987 team at the NCAA championships. Jon set the Rice indoor 3,000 meter record
with a time of 8:06.66, which still stands.
He also set the Rice record of 4:03.05 in the indoor mile. Jon
participated on the U.S.
national team for the 1997 IAAF World Championships in Athens competing in the marathon. He was
eighth in the 1996 Olympic Trials marathon in 2:15:59, and competed in the 2000
Trials. He was a finalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 1992 Olympic
Trials, champion of the 1995 Olympic Festival and has a best mile time of
3:59.30.
Track workouts are held at the
Rice track on Tuesday evenings at 5:15. Feel free to join us in a
workout. We always welcome smiling
faces!
